Barry Eichengreen

Barry Eichengreen holds the George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Chair as Distinguished Professor of Economics and Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He serves as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. His prior roles include Senior Policy Advisor at the International Monetary Fund (1997-98) and 15-year convener of the Bellagio Group of academics and officials. He is a regular monthly columnist for Project Syndicate.

Eichengreen's research spans international finance, macroeconomics, economic history, and political economy, with expertise in the international monetary system, currency crises, and European economic integration. Recent work addresses Ukraine's reconstruction architecture, central bank independence in blockchain contexts, geopolitical currency competition, public debt sustainability, and migration economics. His scholarship integrates historical analysis with contemporary policy challenges, particularly in post-war economic frameworks and institutional trust dynamics.
