Barry Collins is a Senior Lecturer and Interim Head of the Department of Law & Criminology at the University of East London's Royal Docks School of Business and Law. He holds a BCL from University College Cork and an LLM from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on international law, human rights, legal theory, law and film, and employment law. Notable works include studies on the Irish peace process, Palestinian sovereignty under international law, and the role of cinema in representing human rights struggles.
Collins has taught courses in international law, human rights advocacy, and jurisprudence, previously leading LLM programs in international law, human rights, and energy law. He is an active visiting lecturer in Australia, Russia, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. His academic contributions span interdisciplinary analyses of conflict resolution, memory politics, and legal philosophy. He is affiliated with the University of East London's Centre on Human Rights in Conflict (CHRC) and holds a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
His publications explore intersections between law and culture, including the legal implications of cinematic representation in The Act of Killing and the jurisprudence of historical memory in Spain. Recent work critiques the legal frameworks governing extraterritorial human rights obligations and the mythology surrounding international law's role in conflicts like the Iraq War.
