Barroca Mario Jorge

Mário Jorge Barroca is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, holding this position since 2014. Previously, he served as Associate Professor there from 1983 to 2014. He is a leading scholar in Portuguese Medieval Archaeology, focusing on fortifications, military architecture, and epigraphy. He currently serves as Vice-Dean of the Faculty and coordinates the CITCEM research group “Territories and Landscapes.”

• Positions: Editor of PORTVGALIA, coordinator of the Encyclopaedia of Romanesque (Portugal volumes), and leader of multiple heritage projects

His research interests span medieval fortifications (9th–15th centuries), Portuguese medieval archaeology, and the interplay between military structures and socio-political dynamics. He has produced over 150 publications, including monographs, exhibition catalogs, and peer-reviewed articles.

Recent work includes the critical edition of medieval inscriptions (Portvgaliæ Monumenta Historica, 2017) and the guidebook for Guimarães Castle (2019). He has received major awards such as the National Defense Prize (1990) and the Instituto Português de Heráldica honor (2000). His contributions to heritage interpretation are evident through roles in projects like the Battle of Aljubarrota Interpretive Center (2002–2008) and the Castle of Soure Interpretive Center (ongoing).

Barroca’s academic service includes roles on the Scientific Council of the University of Porto (2014–present), the Battle of Aljubarrota Foundation, and the Iberian Association of Military History.
