Prof. Dr. Baris Tursun is a full Professor and Head of the Unit for Molecular Cell Biology of Animals at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences, University of Hamburg, Germany. He has held this position since 2021, following leadership roles at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (2012-2021) and postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University and the University of Massachusetts.
- Research Focus: Molecular protective mechanisms of cells, epigenetics in reprogramming and aging, C. elegans as a model organism, and the intersection of epigenetics with metabolism.
- Key Techniques: Reverse genetics (RNAi), ATAC-Seq, ChIP-Seq, and co-immunoprecipitation with mass spectrometry.
His work spans epigenetic regulation, cellular reprogramming, and aging mechanisms, with recent publications (2023-2019) emphasizing conserved molecular barriers in TF-mediated reprogramming, chromatin dynamics in C. elegans, and translational insights from hibernating bear proteomics. Articles highlight interdisciplinary applications in regenerative medicine and age-related therapies.
Scientific Awards include the European Research Council STG Grant (2015), Marie Curie Career Reintegration Grant (2013), Francis Goelet Fellowship (2008), and DFG Postdoctoral Fellowship (2006). His research also intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
