Barbara Törnquist-Plewa is Professor of Eastern and Central European Studies at Lund University, Sweden, where she serves as Head of the Centre for European Studies. She currently leads the international research network 'In Search for Transcultural Memory in Europe,' financed by the EU's COST programme.
Her research focuses on nationalism, identity formation, and collective memories in Eastern and Central Europe. She has published extensively in English, Swedish, and Polish on the modern history and culture of the region, with particular attention to cultural diversity, ethnic cleansing, and urban heritage in Central and Eastern European cities.
Her most recent publication, 'Beyond Transition? Memory and Identity Narratives in Eastern and Central Europe' (2015), co-authored with N. Bernsand and E. Narvselius, examines post-communist transition narratives across the region. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on how historical memory shapes contemporary identity in post-socialist societies.
Professor Törnquist-Plewa actively participates in international academic discourse, recently presenting on 'Remembering Ethnic Cleansing and Lost Cultural Diversity in Central and Eastern European Cities: The Case of Breslau/Wrocław.' Her research network reflects her commitment to transcultural approaches to European memory studies.
As Head of the Centre for European Studies at Lund University, she oversees research initiatives examining European integration, identity formation, and the complex legacies of historical events across the continent. Her leadership of the COST-funded network demonstrates her standing as a significant contributor to European memory studies.
