Barbara Sutton is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She holds dual affiliations with the Sociology Department and the Africana, Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies Department.

Her research explores body politics, human rights, transnational gender issues, and women's activism in Latin America. She analyzes intersections of gender, race, class, and nation in neoliberal contexts, focusing on embodiment, resistance, and structural violence.
Recent publications examine abortion rights, militarization, and transnational feminist strategies. Her 2010 book Bodies in Crisis received the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Book Prize. She co-edited Security Disarmed (2008) and Abortion and Democracy (2021).
