Barbara Stark is the Joseph Kushner Distinguished Professor in Civil Liberties Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. She holds a B.A. from Cornell University (1973), a J.D. from New York University (1976), and an LL.M. from Columbia University (1989).

Her research focuses on International Family Law, Human Rights, and Gender Bias, with a particular emphasis on cross-border family disputes, child custody, adoption, and domestic violence. Her work bridges Comparative Law, Transnational Jurisdiction, and Legal Harmonization.
Recent publications include the Routledge Handbook of International Family Law (2021), which explores global jurisdictions and legal traditions, and Human Rights and Children (2017), addressing child rights frameworks. Earlier works like Family Law in New York (2016) and Global Issues in Family Law (2007) analyze domestic and transnational family law challenges.

Professor Stark has co-taught international human rights courses with Judge John L. Murray at Aix-Marseille University and taught international family law at Doshisha Law School in Japan.
