Barbara St. Pierre Schneider

Barbara St. Pierre Schneider is a Professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), within the College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Her research focuses on the leukocyte response to skeletal muscle trauma, particularly exploring factors like ovarian hormones and hypobaric hypoxia that influence muscle recovery. She investigates non-pharmacological therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and senescent-related genes to expedite muscle regeneration. Schneider holds the Endowed Chair in Gerontological Nursing Excellence and has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Nursing Leadership award and recognition from Baylor University and LSU Health Sciences Center.

She earned her PhD in Nursing from UCLA (1993), MS from the University of Washington (1986), and BSN from LSU Health Sciences Center (1982). Her teaching spans baccalaureate to doctoral levels, emphasizing research grant writing, critical appraisal, and nursing theory. She has mentored over 50 students across all academic levels.

Her research has been funded by grants from the Department of Defense, NIH, and private foundations, totaling over $6 million. Key projects include studying hyperbaric oxygen’s role in muscle regeneration and the impact of hypobaric hypoxia on inflammation. Her work bridges clinical practice and translational science, with implications for military and civilian populations.
