Barbara St. Marie, PhD, AGPCNP, FAANP, FAAN, serves as Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, specializing in pain management and opioid safety with over 20 years of clinical experience across palliative care, hospice, and primary care settings.
Her educational background includes:

Dr. St. Marie's research targets acute/chronic pain management, identifying patients at risk for opioid misuse, and developing pharmacologic/nonpharmacologic interventions. Her work addresses the coexistence of chronic pain and substance use disorders, focusing on decision-support tools for primary care providers to reduce opioid-related harm across the care continuum.
She holds prestigious fellowships as FAANP and FAAN, with current research funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for Decision Support for Responsible Pain Management, building on prior grants examining opioid prescribing in primary care and methadone clinics.
In teaching, she instructs physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology for the Clinical Nurse Leader program.
