Barbara Nagel is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Princeton University’s Department of German, with affiliations in Gender and Sexuality Studies and Renaissance Studies. Her research examines rhetoric, affect, and violence in German literature from the Baroque to realism.
Education includes:
- Ph.D. from New York University
- Studies at Free University Berlin
Research explores how language mediates aggression, gender dynamics, and power structures. Current projects analyze 'ambiguous aggression' in literary texts and Luther’s reformation of rhetoric.
Awards include the Humboldt Research Fellowship and Berlin Prize. She serves on advisory boards for PMLA and Cornell's Signale book series.
