Barbara Martini

Barbara Martini, PhD, is a full Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Professor of Economics at Temple University Rome. She also serves as an Associate Researcher at the Research Centre for Macroeconomic and Regional Forecasting of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies and as the Rector’s Delegate for Equal Opportunities and Inclusion at Tor Vergata.

Research Interests

Professor Martini’s research sits at the intersection of gender economics, regional resilience, spatial econometrics and innovation studies. She investigates how regional economic structures, human capital and institutional factors mediate the capacity of territories to absorb shocks and sustain inclusive growth. A recurrent theme is the role of gender equality in shaping regional resilience and productivity differentials across Italian provinces and regions.

Recent Publication Trends

Between 2019 and 2022, Martini authored or co-authored more than fifteen peer-reviewed articles focusing on spatio-temporal analyses of regional resilience, gender effects on industrial variety, and the economic impacts of Covid-19 at the provincial level. Her work is published in leading journals such as Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, Spatial Economic Analysis, Journal of Macroeconomics and Scienze Regionali, reflecting a strong quantitative orientation and policy relevance.

Teaching & Academic Service

At Temple University Rome she teaches Macroeconomic Principles, Microeconomic Principles and International Trade, while at Tor Vergata she delivers Statistical Methods in Economics, Economics of Innovation and Gender & Inclusion. She is also module leader for Spatial Econometrics in the PhD programme at Sapienza University of Rome. Additionally, she serves on the Gender Committee of the Italian Society of Economics (SIE) and is a member of AISRe, ERSA and SIE.
