Dr. Barbara Lüscher serves as a Scientific Associate at the Department of Classical Studies within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Basel. Her academic career spans over four decades, beginning as a research assistant at the Egyptological Seminar Basel in 1983. She has maintained a long-standing affiliation with the University of Basel while also contributing to academic activities at the University of Zurich since 2001.
Dr. Lüscher earned her doctorate in 1995 from the University of Basel after studying Egyptology, Hittitology, and Comparative Religious Studies with a focus on Islam and the Ancient Orient. Her educational background provided the foundation for her specialized work in ancient Egyptian texts and religious practices.
Her primary research interests center around Egyptology, with particular expertise in the Book of the Dead of the New Kingdom. Dr. Lüscher has dedicated significant effort to creating scholarly resources for Egyptological research, including the Sinuhe Bibliography (1990-2005) and Word Discussions database (since 1992), both of which are now available as online tools. Her collaborative work with Dr. Günther Lapp on the new edition of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead (since 2004) has resulted in the creation of the Book of the Dead Texts (TbT) edition series. Additional research interests include Hittitology, epigraphic studies, and archaeological fieldwork related to ancient Egyptian culture.
Dr. Lüscher has been actively involved in professional organizations, co-founding the Ancient Egypt Foundation (SAÄ) in 1999 and serving as President of its Board of Trustees from 1999-2000. She has contributed to numerous archaeological projects, including epigraphic and archaeological work led by Prof. Erik Hornung at the Egyptological Seminar Basel, the "MISR: Mission Siptah – Ramses X" project (since 1998), and the "VisualGlyph" project (2003-2004) focused on hieroglyphic computer fonts.
Her professional activities extend beyond traditional academic work to include volunteer contributions at Orientverlag G. Lapp, where she has been involved in website creation and maintenance, book design and layout, administration, and advertising. She has also co-created the "Contributions to Ancient Egypt" (BAÄ) edition series and provided support for external authors. Additional work includes processing and publication of Édouard Naville's estate relevant to the Book of the Dead and creating handwritten or computer-based synopses for external clients.
