Barbara Larson is a Professor of Modern European Art at the University of West Florida, affiliated with the Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. Her office is located in Building 82, Room 208. She holds a PhD from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, with earlier degrees from Northwestern University.
Her research focuses on science's intersection with 19th-century visual culture, including evolutionism, medicine, and Symbolism. She authored The Dark Side of Nature: Science, Society, and the Fantastic in the Work of Odilon Redon, co-edited volumes like The Art of Evolution: Darwin, Darwinisms, and Visual Culture, and contributed to international exhibitions. She leads the Art and Science since 1750 book series for Routledge.
Larson has secured grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the University of Melbourne. Her teaching includes courses on 19th-century art and science, women and art, and modern art movements.
