Barbara L. Zust is a Professor in the Department of Nursing at Gustavus Adolphus College. A graduate of Gustavus (B.A.) and the University of Minnesota (M.S., Ph.D.), her expertise spans domestic violence, family health, rural nursing, mental health, and Newman's Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness.

Zust's research focuses on empowering marginalized populations through the INSIGHT program, particularly rural and incarcerated women. She integrates these themes into her teaching of maternity and mental health nursing, emphasizing rural-urban healthcare contrasts and student-led research presented at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR).
Her accolades include the Nursing Network on Violence Against Women International Teacher of the Year (2006) and the Edgar Carlson Teaching Award (2011). Zust collaborates with the North Slope Borough and Ilisagvik College, leading public health initiatives in Alaska. She also organizes international J-Term programs in Sweden, India, Tanzania, and Madagascar, with future plans for Madagascar in 2021.
