Dr. Barbara Krawcowicz is an affiliated researcher with the Institute of Literary Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN). She holds a PhD in religious and Jewish studies from Indiana University Bloomington (2013) and a philosophy degree from the University of Warsaw (2006). Her academic career includes teaching positions at Indiana University Bloomington, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and postgraduate programs in gender studies and Polish-Jewish studies at IBL PAN.
Her research focuses on contemporary Jewish religious thought, particularly how Jewish communities adapt to historical crises such as the Holocaust. She employs historical discourse analysis to explore moments of religious transformation. A second major research area is the methodologies and theories of religious studies, examining Judaism as a case study for broader interdisciplinary questions in the field.
Her publications include monographs such as History, Metahistory, and Evil: Jewish Responses to the Holocaust (2020) and edited volumes like Thinking with Jonathan Z. Smith (in press). She has contributed articles to journals such as Method and Theory in the Study of Religion and Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies.
Dr. Krawcowicz teaches courses on religious studies fundamentals, Jewish thought, and the history of religious studies. Her work bridges historical analysis with theoretical frameworks, emphasizing the sociopolitical dimensions of religious discourse.
