Barbara Kinder

Dr Barbara Kinder is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University, based at the Gold Coast Campus. Her academic roles include serving as a Teaching Associate and tutoring research approaches for the Industry Research Project unit.

Her research focuses on the political economy of electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in Australia, applying Marxian value theory to analyze surplus profits, value relations, and distribution networks within EGM production. Key findings highlight how transnational capitalist class entities leverage akratic EGM technologies in socio-economically disadvantaged communities for surplus extraction.

Dr Kinder’s work intersects with subfields such as global value chains, socio-economic class dynamics, and the ideological structures underpinning capitalism in gambling industries. She maintains affiliations with Southern Cross University’s Faculty of Business, Law and Arts across both Lismore and Gold Coast campuses.
