Barbara Hlibowicka-Węglarz

Barbara Hlibowicka-Węglarz is a Professor at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin, Poland, affiliated with the Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Luis Lindley Cintra Chair of Portuguese Studies. She directs the Portuguese Language Center / Camões and has held significant administrative roles, including Prorector of UMCS (2012-2016) and Dean of the Faculty of Philology (2021-2025). Her work focuses on Romance linguistics, with a specialization in Portuguese, including aspectual categories and creole languages.

• Education: Master's in Romance Philology from University of Wrocław; PhD (1986) from Jagiellonian University, defended in Kraków; habilitation in 1999 at UMCS.

Her research explores semantic-syntactic models of natural languages, particularly Portuguese aspectual markers, and creole languages formed from Portuguese lexicon. She has conducted contrastive analyses between Portuguese/French and Polish. She has collaborated internationally with universities in Brazil, Portugal, and other countries since the 1990s.

• Comendador de Ordem de Mérito from Portugal's President (2009)

As director of the only Polish Camões Portuguese Language Center since 2005, she has organized ~300 cultural events. She has served as Honorary Consul of Brazil in Lublin since 2007.
