Barbara Dooley is a Full Professor in the School of Psychology at University College Dublin (UCD). She has held senior administrative roles including Dean of Graduate Studies (2014-2022, 2023-2024), Acting Registrar & Deputy President (2022-2023), and Head of the School of Psychology (2005-2009). Her research focuses on youth mental health, particularly risk and protective factors in adolescents and young adults (12-25 years), leveraging the My World Survey series (n=34,000+ participants). She co-founded the UCD Youth Mental Health Lab and serves on national and international advisory boards, including the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention and the European Universities Association.
Education: BA, PhD (University College Dublin), Dip Stat (Trinity College Dublin).
Research priorities include mental health disparities in sexual minorities, body image concerns, and student well-being. She has led over 22 grants, including the My World Survey initiatives and technology-based interventions like CopeSmart. Awards include the 2019 UCD Research Impact Case Study Competition recognition.
Her work emphasizes translational research, policy development, and collaborative frameworks to improve youth mental health services nationally and globally. She has published extensively on topics like sexual victimization in students, epidemiology of mental health trends, and institutional data-sharing systems for counseling services.
