Barbara Comber is a Professor in the School of Education at the University of Salzburg. Her research focuses on literacy studies, critical pedagogy, and educational equity, with a particular emphasis on place-based pedagogies and sociocultural dimensions of learning. She has authored and co-authored numerous books and articles, including Literacy, Place, and Pedagogies of Possibility (2016) and edited volumes such as International Handbook of Research on Children's Literacy, Learning, and Culture (2013).
Her work explores how literacy practices intersect with identity, policy, and spatial contexts, advocating for pedagogies that empower marginalized communities. Key themes include critical literacy, gender equity in education, and the role of technology in literacy development. Comber has contributed to projects addressing literacy in high-poverty schools and has collaborated on initiatives like the Exceptional Teachers for Disadvantaged Schools program.
Comber’s research spans over two decades, with publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Research Papers in Education, British Educational Research Journal, and Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking literacy studies with sociology, geography, and policy analysis to address systemic inequities in education.
