Barbara Allen is the James Woodward Strong Professor of Political Science and the Liberal Arts at Carleton College, where she has been affiliated since 1988. Her research and teaching focus on Political Science, with particular expertise in American Politics, Electoral Politics, and the intersection of Media Effects with political communication.

Allen's work examines how campaign advertising affects civil discourse, as highlighted in her award-winning book Truth in Advertising? Lies in Political Advertising and How They Affect the Electorate (2019), which won the Richard E. Neustadt Book Prize. She also directed the film Actual World, Possible Future, recognized with a 2020 Bronze Medal at the National Telly Awards in the Social Responsibility Category.
Recent courses she teaches include POSC 100: American Elections of 2024, POSC 204: Media and Electoral Politics, and POSC 200: Politics of the Future, reflecting her interest in psychological and political barriers to systemic change. Beyond academia, she collaborated with Rebecca Kite to design and patent the GP Percussion timpani, now displayed at the International Percussive Arts Society Museum.
