Barbara A. Olsen is an Associate Professor and Chair of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College, where she has served since 2002. She specializes in Aegean Prehistory, focusing on women and gendered institutions in Greek Prehistory, historical memory, and children in early Greek history. Her academic leadership includes directing Vassar’s Women’s Studies program from 2015–2018.
Education: BA from Cornell University, PhD in Classical Studies from Duke University.
Research interests include Mycenaean social structures, women’s roles in ancient economies, and the intersection of archaeology with gender theory. She has published extensively on Mycenaean tablets (notably Linear B), Minoan-Mycenaean symbolism, and feminist reinterpretations of ancient sources.
Notable works include her monograph *Women in Mycenaean Greece* (Routledge 2014) and editorial work on Routledge’s *The Greek World* series. Her current research examines transitions between Mycenaean and Iron Age Greece through a gendered lens.
Awards/Fellowships: Center for Hellenic Studies Fellow (2011-12), Vanderpool Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies.
Teaching includes courses on Greek archaeology, women in antiquity, and classical historiography. She has also collaborated with community programs like Vassar’s Exploring Transfer initiative for community college students.
