Bangfu Zhu is a Research Associate in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, specializing in molecular neuroscience and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
His research focuses on Alzheimer's disease pathology, particularly investigating tau protein mutations (P301L), neurogranin interactions, and neuronal excitability dysregulation. Using proteomics and interactome analysis, he examines how proteasome dysfunction contributes to neurodegeneration, with emphasis on synaptic protein networks and calcineurin signaling pathways.
His 2024 publication in Cell Death and Disease demonstrates how mutant tau disengages from proteasome complexes and neurogranin, triggering pathological neuronal hyperexcitability—a critical mechanism in Alzheimer's progression. This work connects proteostasis failure to network-level dysfunction in neurodegenerative conditions.
Zhu currently serves as a Researcher on an Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK) Project Grant (2026-2027) led by Prof. James Mason, investigating molecular pathways in neurodegeneration. His collaborative network includes neuroscience and molecular biology researchers across institutional boundaries.
