Banchamlak Kassaun is a Research Fellow at the Department of Geography, Earth, and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Environment at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Holding a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology from Lakehead University, she specializes in biopolymer synthesis, lignin modification, and sustainable transformation of natural materials into advanced composites for coatings and 3D printing applications.

Her research focuses on developing eco-friendly packaging solutions using biotechnology and 3D printing, with expertise in biopolymer processing, lignin chemistry, and green innovation. Her work spans international collaborations in Ethiopia, China, and Canada, integrating sustainable practices into practical design and material science.
Her recent publications highlight advancements in solvent-free lignin-silica hybrid coatings, superhydrophobic rubber films for oil-water separation, and biodegradable composites derived from lignin and natural fibers. These align with her broader goals of reducing environmental impacts through renewable resource utilization.
