Baljit Kaur

Baljit Kaur is a Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her work focuses on ethnography, resistance, and urban violence, particularly as mediated through rap music. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from the University of Sussex (funded by CHASE AHRC).

• Ethnographic studies of youth and resistance in urban contexts
• Rap music as a narrative of violence and identity
• Gendered experiences of violence in East London
• Community-based projects addressing mutual aid and abolitionist frameworks

Publications include contributions to Sonic Rebellions: Sound & Social Justice (2023) and Dissonant Sounds: Diaspora, Technology, Culture and Politics (2024), analyzing rap music’s role in socio-political contexts.

Labs/Teams: Co-organizer of the ‘Love, Care and Mutual Aid’ project (2020) and ‘Resist’ initiative, both addressing state violence and community solidarity. Currently co-leads an Abolitionist book club with the Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies.
