Bahman Abbasi is an Associate Professor and Welty Faculty Fellow at Oregon State University's College of Engineering, Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. He joined OSU in 2017 after roles at Booz Allen Hamilton, the U.S. Department of Energy, and General Electric. His expertise spans thermal-fluid sciences, desalination systems, and advanced materials. Abbasi holds a Ph.D. (2010) and M.S. (2007) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, respectively, and a B.S. (2004) in Mechanical Engineering.
His research focuses on the water-energy nexus, control systems in thermal-fluid applications, and advanced materials. He has authored 20 technical publications and holds 5 patents, including innovations in desalination and energy-efficient systems. Abbasi leads the Water and Energy Technologies Lab, where his team develops novel desalination technologies, such as zero-liquid discharge systems using humidification-dehumidification (HDH).
His work emphasizes sustainable solutions for water scarcity and energy efficiency, with projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Notable contributions include anti-fouling heat exchangers, organic recovery from wastewater, and cyclone separator integration in desalination systems. Abbasi’s research bridges academia and industry, addressing global challenges in water and energy systems.
