Bahar Acu is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Pitzer College and an extended Faculty member at Claremont Graduate University's Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Her academic journey includes positions at UCLA, Northwestern University, ETH Zürich, and the Institute for Advanced Study. She specializes in geometric topology with a focus on contact and symplectic manifolds in higher dimensions and their ties to low-dimensional topology.
- Ph.D., University of Southern California (2017), advised by Ko Honda
- M.Sc., University of Southern California (2011-2017)
- B.Sc., Middle East Technical University (2004-2008)
Her research explores the topology and geometry of higher-dimensional contact and symplectic manifolds, emphasizing open book decompositions, Lefschetz fibrations, and symplectic fillings. She has organized pivotal events like the Research Collaboration Conference for Women and Nonbinary in Symplectic and Contact Geometry and co-edited its proceedings.
Recent publications highlight advancements in iterated planar structures, symplectic field theory, and mapping class group interactions. She has received numerous accolades, including the Avery Fellowship, Leibniz Fellowship, and multiple teaching and research grants from USC and the American Mathematical Society.
- Co-chair, CCMS Mathematics Colloquium
- Co-organizer, Claremont Topology Seminar
