Barbara Baert is a Professor Ordinarius at the University of Leuven, teaching in the fields of Iconology, Art Theory & Analysis, and Medieval Art since 2010. She has held tenured and tenure-track positions at KU Leuven since 1997.
- Founded the Iconology Research Group (2006)
- Editor-in-chief of the series 'Studies in Iconology' and 'Art&Religion'
Her research intersects art history, iconology, anthropology, and religious studies, focusing on medieval imagery and its interpretation. She has directed multiple interdisciplinary projects funded by the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders (FWO) and KU Leuven.

- Francqui Prize (2016)
- Member ad vitam, Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium (since 2014)
Baert collaborates internationally with art historians and theorists, including James Elkins, Jeffrey Hamburger, and Gerhard Wolf. She serves as a representative for Belgium in the European Standing Committee for Humanities (since 2010).
