Dr. Babak Sarrafpour is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Oral Surgery, Medicine and Diagnostics at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2013) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in New York before returning to Sydney in 2016. His research focuses on mechanical stress in tooth development, oral pathology, and finite element analysis. He has pioneered studies on tooth eruption mechanisms, mandibular cyst expansion, and biomechanical modeling of dental structures.
Education:
- PhD in Biomechanics, University of Sydney (2013)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, New York, USA (2014–2015)
His work integrates computational models (FEA) with experimental systems to explore bone remodeling, cyst formation, and the role of mechanical forces in oral diseases. He has developed innovative teaching methods, including eNotebooks and Smart Sparrow platforms for Clinico-Pathological Enquiry-Based Learning (CPEBL). Recent projects include studies on bacterial adhesion mechanics and oral submucosal fibrosis mechanisms.
Key Awards:
- 2016 NSW Fresh Science Nominee
- 2009–2013 Faculty Scholarship for International Students, University of Sydney
Dr. Sarrafpour collaborates widely, with grants from the Australian Dental Research Foundation and industry partners. His work has been featured in media for discoveries like the role of chewing forces in tooth eruption and AI-driven dental education tools.
