Dr. BATIONO Bouma Fernand is an Associate Professor in Socio-Anthropology and specialist in health and social protection at the University Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Since 2015, he has held this academic position and has served as the Director of the Unité de Formation et Recherche en Sciences Humaines (UFR/SH) since 2018, following his tenure as Deputy Director from 2016 to 2018.
His education includes a PhD in Social Change and Development (1993, University of Lille, France), a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in General and Applied Anthropology (1989, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis), and a Master's in Sociology (1988, same institution).
Research focuses on Medical Anthropology, Public Health, and Social Change in West Africa, particularly Burkina Faso. He has contributed to projects like the PASSAGE grant (2006–2009) and ANRS 12316 (2014–2016), and co-directs the West African Interdisciplinary Journal. He is affiliated with the GEP/VS (Vulnerabilities and Contemporary Societies) research group and the ECOPPAF network (Economy of Punishment and Prison in Africa).
His academic service includes roles in institutional leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing socio-cultural dimensions of health systems and development challenges in Africa.
