Dr. Azure Thompson is a Researcher affiliated with Yale School of Medicine and serves as Associate Director of Policy and Research Analysis at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) in New York. Her work focuses on understanding the intersection of tobacco use, racial/ethnic disparities, and public policy. She has conducted critical research on smoking behaviors in Black women and the influence of tobacco retailers in minority communities.
Collaborating with institutions like CUNY and New York University, Thompson investigates tobacco-free campus policies and their impact on youth in diverse populations. Her research also addresses smoking cessation interventions for 'disconnected youth' (ages 16–25 not in school or employed) and extends to emerging products like e-cigarettes and hookahs. Thompson’s interdisciplinary approach bridges rigorous research with actionable policy recommendations, aiming to reduce addiction’s societal burden. She is a former Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Scholar, part of NIH-funded programs at Yale.
Her collaborative efforts include a Yale School of Public Health partnership to establish a New Haven-based addiction research and policy center. Thompson emphasizes long-term commitment to public health, stating, 'You have to believe and have faith that you will make a difference.'
