Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels is a leading economist at the University of Cologne, where he serves as Director of the Cologne Laboratory of Economic Research (CLER) and as a Principal Investigator in the Excellence Cluster ECONtribute. He also holds a directorship at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. With visiting positions at Penn State, Harvard, Stanford, and UC San Diego, Ockenfels bridges academic rigor with real-world applications in market design and behavioral economics.
Ockenfels' research centers on "behavioral economic engineering", combining game theory and behavioral science to design markets, algorithms, and competitive strategies. His work spans critical sectors including climate, energy, health, transport, finance, and technology, with a special focus on market design during crises. Notable projects include reforms for electricity markets, vaccine supply chains, and kidney exchange programs.
His scientific contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (2005), the Gossen Prize (2006), an ERC Advanced Grant (2018), the Zukunftspreis of the University of Cologne (2020), and the Exeter Prize (2022). He serves as a Department Editor for Management Science and as a key advisor to German federal ministries.
Ockenfels pioneers experimental economics to understand economic behavior. His research includes models of inequality aversion, intentionality, and boundedly rational behavior. He has collaborated with governments, global market platforms (including eBay's auction design), and companies to translate theoretical insights into practical solutions.
