Awewura Kwara is a Professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine and serves as the VA Section Chief in the Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine. His work spans clinical pharmacology, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and travel medicine, with a focus on pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and pharmacogenomics in coinfected populations. He received his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and further training at Tulane University and Cook County Hospital.
- Education: MD (University of Ghana), MPH/Tropical Medicine (Tulane), Internal Medicine Residency (Cook County Hospital), Infectious Disease Fellowship (Tulane).
Dr. Kwara’s research explores the molecular basis of inter-individual variability in HIV, HBV, and TB treatment outcomes, particularly in coinfected patients. His work bridges pharmacogenomics and clinical pharmacology to optimize therapies at both individual and population levels. Collaborations include the Center for Pharmacogenomics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and institutions in Ghana.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in HIV diagnosis timing, pharmacokinetics of antiretroviral therapies, and the impact of genetic and behavioral factors on treatment efficacy. He has secured multiple NIH grants to study pediatric HIV/TB pharmacokinetics, dolutegravir optimization, and adherence interventions in Ghanaian youth.
- Notable Grants: NIH/NIAID, NIH/NICHD, Fogarty International Center
His clinical certifications in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Tropical Medicine underscore his commitment to advancing global health research and addressing disparities in HIV and TB care.
