Avner Levin is a Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University's Lincoln Alexander School of Law and cross-appointed to the Department of Law & Business at the Ted Rogers School of Management. As an originating committee member of the law school, he has held significant interim leadership roles including interim dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management (2018) and interim vice-provost of faculty affairs (2012-2013). During the 2025 Winter semester, he serves as a Visiting Scholar at the David Weiner Center for Lawyers' Ethics at Haim Striks School of Law in Israel.
His educational credentials include a BSc and LLB from Tel-Aviv University, and an LLM and SJD from the University of Toronto.
Levin's research critically examines Privacy Law, Law & Technology, the Legal Profession, and Tort Law with particular focus on cybercrime implications for finance, emerging technology regulation, and litigation trends in Ontario. His interdisciplinary work bridges legal theory with practical technological challenges, emphasizing sustainable regulatory frameworks and ethical professional conduct in digital environments.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent scholarly output at the intersection of privacy law and financial systems, with growing emphasis on technology monopolies and cybercrime's societal impacts. His work spans theoretical analyses of privacy expectations and concrete examinations of Canadian legislation's implementation challenges.
Levin directs major research initiatives including the Law Research Centre and Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute, securing funding from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Public Safety Canada, and Industry Canada. His collaborative projects frequently involve cross-border partnerships with institutions like Tel-Aviv University's Blavatnik Interdisciplinary Cyber Research Center.
As founding director of the Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute, Levin has established Toronto Metropolitan University as a hub for cutting-edge research on data protection, cybercrime prevention, and technology policy development through interdisciplinary team collaborations.
