Dr. Avidan Kent is a Professor of Law at the University of East Anglia (UEA), serving as the Law School's Director of Research and founder of UEA’s International Law Research Group. He holds affiliations with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, ClimateUEA, and leads the International Law research cluster. His expertise spans International Law, Environmental Law, International Economic Law, and Climate Change Law, with a focus on climate-induced migration and sustainable development.
Education: PhD (Cantab) from the University of Cambridge. His research integrates legal frameworks with climate challenges, addressing gaps in protection for climate refugees and fostering policy coherence for development. He has authored/edited books on climate-induced migration, renewable energy investment in the Global South, and legal responses to climate displacement.
Recent research trends emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to climate law, including synergies between investment law and sustainable development goals. He has contributed to policy briefs for international organizations and governments, advocating for cross-sectoral governance models to address climate migration. His work aligns with UN SDGs 7 (Clean Energy), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land).
He supervises PhD students in International Law, Environmental Law, and Dispute Settlement. As project lead on 'The Future of International Courts: Evolution and Challenges Ahead' (2017), he explores institutional challenges facing global legal frameworks. His advocacy includes speaking at events like the 'Climate Change – Law, Justice and the Global South' seminar (2024).
He heads the International Law Research Group, fostering collaborative projects on climate law and global justice. His book International Law and Renewable Energy Investment in the Global South (2022) highlights fragmented legal frameworks and proposes policy coherence strategies to enhance renewable energy investments.
