Avi I. Flamholz is an Assistant Professor at The Rockefeller University, leading the Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology. His research focuses on microbial contributions to the global carbon cycle and climate change mitigation. He combines genomics, synthetic biology, and computational methods to study microbial nutrient processing and community dynamics in soil ecosystems.
Education:
- B.S.E. in Computer Science, Princeton University (2007)
- Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology, UC Berkeley (2019)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, California Institute of Technology (2020–2024)
Research Interests: Flamholz investigates how microbial respiration influences global CO2 emissions, develops predictive models of soil microbial communities, and explores carbon-negative biotechnologies. His work bridges computational modeling, experimental microbiology, and environmental science to address climate challenges.
Key Projects:
- Quantifying microbial respiration limits using model bacteria
- Machine learning for soil chemistry inference from sequencing data
- Engineering microbial systems for sustainable agriculture and materials
Awards:
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (2014)
- Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021)
- Burroughs Wellcome Career Award (2023)
Lab Activities: The laboratory integrates 3D environmental modeling, high-throughput experimentation, and AI-driven analytics to predict soil respiration patterns and design microbiological solutions for carbon management. Current initiatives include global soil chemistry mapping and development of carbon-capture microbial strains.
