Dr Averil Grieve is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University’s Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE) within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She specializes in transcultural teaching practices, second language acquisition, and supporting international students in clinical and academic placements. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics (Melbourne University) and a Master’s in Cross-Cultural Communication (University of Sydney).
Her research focuses on language acquisition in health professions education, scaffolded communication skills, and embedding industry-linked communication into curricula. Key projects include analyzing training needs for clinical field educators of international students and exploring ethical use of AI in academic writing. She is Associate Editor of Journal of Academic Language and Learning and TESOL in Context.
