Austra Avotina serves as an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Art and Technology at the Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art of the University of Latvia. She has been a lecturer at the university since 1989, achieving the rank of Associate Professor in 2016, and has led the Department of Art and Technology since 2018. Additionally, she heads the study council for the 'Art' study field and has developed multiple sub-programs including 'Teacher of Art History,' 'Teacher of Cultural History,' 'Teacher of Cultural Studies,' and 'Teacher of Cultural Awareness and Self-Expression in Art.'
Dr. Avotina's research interests focus on the intersection of art, culture, and education. Her work spans Art History, Contemporary Art History, Interior History, Graphic Design History, and Theoretical Foundations of Design. She has developed significant expertise in visual literacy as a 21st century competence, cultural capital in education, and the integration of cultural understanding into educational frameworks. A. Avotina actively participates in academic leadership through her representation of the University of Latvia in the European Network of Art and Cultural Education Observatories at UNESCO (ENO). She is a member of the International Society for Education Through Art (InSEA) and the European Network for Visual Literacy (ENViL), and has established the international conference 'Visual Awareness Week at the University of Latvia,' held annually since 2016. Her advisory work includes counseling students' scientific research and serving on juries for prestigious competitions including the Latvian 'Golden Apple Tree' book competition and international events like the Tallinn Children's Book Illustration Triennial.
