Austin Houldsworth is a Lecturer in the Department of Art and Design at Sheffield Hallam University, part of the College of Social Sciences and Arts. With 13 years of higher education experience, he specializes in critical and speculative design, focusing on interdisciplinary projects that challenge disciplinary boundaries. His research explores sociotechnological systems, particularly money and telecommunications identity. Notable projects include the 'Future of Money' design awards (founded in 2009) and commissions like the Eden Project's 'Intergalactic Estate Agency' Morse Code Messaging Machine.
Teaching includes MA Design and PhD supervision, emphasizing speculative design methodologies. Key exhibitions include works at the V&A Museum and Airspace Gallery. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, his work has been supported by Visa, Barclaycard, and Nesta.
