Aukjen Nauta

Aukjen Nauta is a researcher affiliated with the Soil Geography and Landscape subdivision at Wageningen University & Research. She is currently a PhD candidate in the NWO-funded 'Home Turf' project led by Dr. Roy van Beek, focusing on bog iron ore deposition in raised bogs, particularly the Bourtangermoor region. Her work integrates geological, hydrological, and archaeological perspectives to explore pre-modern resource use and landscape heritage.

Her research examines the geological conditions for bog iron ore formation, their spatial-temporal distribution, and societal utilization during Roman and Medieval periods. The project aims to enhance public awareness of this unique landscape's historical and environmental significance.

Supervised by Dr. Roy van Beek, Prof. Dr. Jakob Wallinga, and Dr. Cathelijne Stoof, the study combines fieldwork, geochemical analysis, and archaeological insights. Funded by NWO's VIDI program, it contributes to heritage management strategies for raised bogs in the Netherlands.
