Audrey Fogels

Audrey Fogels is an Associate Professor at Paris 8 University, specializing in American literature with a focus on 19th-century women writers. As a member of the TransCrit research group (EA:1569), she explores intersections of class, race, and gender in literary-political discourse.

Her research examines how intimacy and relationality in works by Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth B. Stoddard, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Mary Wilkins Freeman reveal unstable American subjectivities shaped by sociopolitical tensions. She analyzes proto-modernist techniques that disrupt genre boundaries to expose hybrid national identities.

Recent publications investigate themes of cultural dislocation (Jewett's The Foreigner), haunted domestic spaces (Freeman's Gothic fiction), and middle-class ritual critique through periodical analysis. Articles are clustered around 19th-century American identity formation and feminist reinterpretations of canonical texts.

Administrative roles include Director of UFR LLCE-LEA (since 2017), co-founder of the MC2L master's program, and leadership in academic governance bodies since 2002. She teaches courses ranging from introductory literature to advanced studies in American Realisms and Gothic fiction.
