Atta Gebril serves as Professor of Applied Linguistics and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at The American University in Cairo's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, within the Department of Applied Linguistics and Educational Studies.
He holds a PhD in Foreign Language and English Language (ESL) Education with a minor in Language Testing from the University of Iowa, where his dissertation examined score generalizability of academic writing tasks.
Gebril's research spans Language Assessment, Learning-oriented Assessment, Second Language Writing, Teacher Beliefs, Test Validation, Generalizability Theory, and Reading-writing Connections, with emphasis on integrating assessment practices to enhance educational outcomes. His work demonstrates consistent focus on validity frameworks and writing evaluation methodologies across diverse educational contexts.
His distinguished contributions have earned significant recognition:
- Scopus award for highest-impact scholarship in Egyptian education (2019)
- Best Article Award in Language Testing from International Language Testing Association (2018)

Gebril serves on editorial boards of Assessing Writing and Language Assessment Quarterly, and co-authored the influential book "Assessment Myths" (University of Michigan Press, 2015).
