Atom Sarkar is a Professor of Neurosurgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and director of Stereotactic, Functional, and Epilepsy Surgery at the Global Neurosciences Institute. A board-certified neurosurgeon, he also directs the Philadelphia Voice Tremor Center. His academic career spans multiple institutions including The Ohio State University, where he previously led neurological nanomedicine and epilepsy programs. Dr. Sarkar holds dual MD/PhD degrees from the University of Miami School of Medicine and a BS in Biology from Brown University.
Education:
- BS in Biology - Brown University
- MD - University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine (1998)
- PhD in Biophysics - University of Miami (with honors)
Research Focus: Dr. Sarkar specializes in neuro-oncology, molecular neuroscience, and translational nanomedicine. His work integrates advanced technologies such as single-molecule mechanics and gene therapy with clinical neurosurgery. Key areas include brain tumor evolution mechanisms, HIV neuropathology, and interdisciplinary approaches to movement disorders like Parkinson's disease. He has pioneered novel treatments for epilepsy and functional neurological disorders through stereotactic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Awards & Recognition:
- Lawrence Mervis Teacher of the Year Award
- Young Investigator Travel Scholarship (Academy of Molecular Imaging)
- NIH/NIDA Grant Co-Investigator (2023-2025)
Grants & Collaborations: Current research includes NIH-funded studies on adult human brain tissue cultures for NeuroHIV research and multi-scale glioma analysis through the Philadelphia Coalition for a Cure. Past work includes a landmark AAV2-GAD gene therapy trial for Parkinson's disease.
Labs & Teams: Leads multidisciplinary teams at Drexel and Global Neurosciences Institute focusing on nanotechnology applications in neurosurgery, neuro-oncological imaging, and functional neurosurgical innovations.
