Athena Mandis is a filmmaker and academic affiliated with the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary University of London. As Convenor of MA Documentary Practice, she bridges creative practice with education, focusing on participatory and community-engaged film projects. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the RIFF 2005 prize for Return to Chiapas.

Her research centers on the intersection of memory studies, documentary practice, and community storytelling, often using film to preserve cultural heritage and explore identity narratives. Projects like Take a Walk With Me (2012) and Insanity, Death and Madness (Heritage Lottery Funded) exemplify this focus.

She advocates for grassroots filmmaking, combining documentary and narrative techniques to engage marginalized communities. Co-founder of Mile End Films (2010–2014), she produced institutional films for UK Sport, No.10 Downing Street, and Tower Hamlets. Current projects include the feature Anatolian Sky, a drama inspired by the Armenian Genocide.
