Athena Farrokhzad serves as Visiting Professor of Language and Culture in the name of Tage Danielsson at Linköping University (LiU) from 2024-2026. She is affiliated with the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS) and the Department of Communication, Literature and Swedish (KLS) within the Faculty of Philosophy.
As a poet, playwright, translator and literary critic, Farrokhzad debuted in 2013 with Vitsvit (White Suite) and has published three additional poetry collections that have been translated into approximately twenty languages. Her plays have been performed on numerous stages, and she has translated works by Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Juliana Spahr and Natalie Diaz into Swedish. Her research interests encompass poetry, literary criticism, translation studies, Swedish literature, multicultural literature, and political poetry, with particular focus on how language both perpetuates and resists oppression.
Farrokhzad's publications demonstrate a consistent engagement with urgent political and social issues, evolving from personal and family narratives toward broader political commentary while maintaining innovative poetic forms. Her work explores themes of violence, migration, revolution, and political resistance through multilingual approaches and rhythmic experimentation.
Prior to her current position, Farrokhzad worked for many years at Biskops-Arnös Writers' School. She currently shares responsibility for literature programming at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm with Ida Linde, which necessitates her half-time commitment to the Tage Danielsson professorship.
