Athena Bazou is an Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (N.K.U.A.), where she has been a staff member since 2013. She has also taught at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in its Postgraduate course in the History of Medicine.
She holds a PhD in Ancient Greek Literature from the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne and has earned academic degrees from the Faculty of Philology of N.K.U.A. and the University Paris III-Nouvelle Sorbonne. Her career spans over 20 years in Open and Distance Learning courses at the Hellenic Open University and the Open University of Cyprus, where she served as a Member of the Teaching Staff, Technical Coordinator, and Content Developer. Additionally, she worked as a Researcher for the Academy of Athens (2003-2012) on Greek and Latin Literature.
Bazou’s research focuses on Ancient Medical Texts, Ancient Greek Science and Technology, Critical Editions, and Text Transmission. Her scholarly work explores intersections between Palaeography, Ancient Philosophy, and the Oriental Tradition of Medical Texts. Her publications include critical analyses of Galen, Plato, and the history of medical thought in antiquity. Recent articles investigate cerebral localization theories, justice in ancient medicine, and the role of krasis in physiognomonic texts.
