Athanasios Peftinas is a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as a Graduate Research Student Resident at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights since January 2023. He holds a Visiting Lecturer position at the European Law & Governance School (ELGS) of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), teaching Comparative Constitutional Law. Additionally, he is a researcher at the 'Krateros Ioannou' Institute of Public International Law and International Relations, coordinating a study on maritime disputes between Greece and Turkey.
His educational background includes a Law Degree (2018) from Democritus University of Thrace, an LL.M. in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (2020) from the same institution, an MSc in Law and Economics (2020) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and University of Macedonia, and an MJur (2021) from Oxford University. He is a qualified practicing lawyer in Greece with two years of professional experience prior to moving to the UK.
Peftinas’ research interests focus on constitutional interpretation during emergencies, particularly the legal invocation of necessity to bypass constitutional frameworks. His work bridges constitutional theory, legal philosophy, and international law, with current emphasis on resolving maritime disputes through legal frameworks.
