Atef Said serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a transition to tenure-line faculty status scheduled for Fall 2017. His academic work bridges theoretical sociology with empirical analysis of contemporary political movements, particularly in the Middle Eastern context.
Dr. Said's research interests span Social Movements, Revolutions, Post-colonial Theory, Empire Studies, Sociological Theory, Historical Ethnography, Political Sociology, and Sociology of the Middle East. His current book project, The Tahrir Effect: Protest, Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Contemporary Egypt, represents a significant contribution to understanding how physical spaces become symbolic centers of political transformation. The work examines the relationship between revolution, social movements, and political public space in Egypt from 2011 to summer 2015, with particular focus on how the confinement of the revolution to Tahrir Square shaped its outcomes.
Dr. Said maintains an active scholarly presence through publications in Social Research, International Sociology, Contemporary Sociology, and Oxford Bibliographies in Sociology. His commitment to public scholarship is evident through regular contributions to platforms including US Amnesty Magazine, the Immanent Frame blog, Jadaliyya, and Mobilizing Ideas since 2013.
