Dr. Astrid Swenson is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in European History at Brunel University London. She directs the Isambard Centre for Historical Research and the Brunel Heritage Research Network. Her work focuses on heritage preservation dynamics across France, Germany, and Britain, with notable contributions to post-colonial heritage studies. Key publications include The Rise of Heritage (Cambridge UP, 2013) and From Plunder to Preservation (Oxford UP, 2013, co-edited with Peter Mandler).
Her research explores borders' impact on heritage narratives, linguistic divides in scholarly approaches, and methodologies transcending disciplinary boundaries. She actively participates in international academic events, such as the ACHS 2016 conference where she contributed to sessions on heritage's global-local tensions and contested urban heritage in divided cities.
