Prof. Dr. Astrid Lorenz is a Professor of the German Political System and European Politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Leipzig. She serves as Dean and Dean's Spokesperson, leading key initiatives in democratic development, multi-level systems (federalism, EU), and transformation processes.
- Education: Diploma in Political Science (1997) and Master of Arts in Eastern European Studies (1998) from the Free University of Berlin; Doctorate (2001) with a DFG scholarship at Humboldt University Berlin.
Her research integrates constitutional politics, rule of law, and political institutions in Germany and East Central Europe. She specializes in democratic backsliding, EU integration, and social cohesion under changing political frameworks.
Recent projects include the EU-funded Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (2020-2024) on EU citizenship in rural East Central Europe and BMBF-funded research on rule of law in countries like Poland and Romania (2021-2024). She also co-edits volumes on illiberal trends and anti-EU politics.

Prof. Lorenz supervises doctoral students in topics ranging from municipal asylum policy to spatial inequality in European democracies.
