Aston Gonzalez is Associate Professor of History at Salisbury University specializing in 19th century African American history, politics, and visual culture. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Michigan and a BA in English and History from Williams College.
His research examines how African American artists used visual technologies to challenge racial stereotypes and represent black leadership. His book explores understudied artists including Patrick Henry Reason, Robert Douglass Jr., and Henry Box Brown.
Gonzalez's work analyzes how these cultural producers adapted emerging visual mediums to subvert dominant racial narratives before, during, and after the Civil War.
